Over 25 tons of waste collected from Olt river sides during the “Adopt a river” project

Starting July this year, the “Adopt a river” project implied over 450 volunteers who gathered more than 25 tons of wastes from 25 km of the Olt river side, in the Covasna, Sibiu, Olt and Valcea districts. Today, the results of this project were presented during a press conference in which Marius Postelnicescu, ANAR manager, also participated.

The “Adopt a river” project, initiated by Romtelecom and „Save the Danube” association and supported by the National Administration Romanian Waters was comprised of actions of sanitizing the Olt river and raising awareness on the importance of protecting the environment. Four river side communities, Sf. Gheorghe, Avrig, Slatina and Ramnicu Valcea, also participated in these actions, together with the initiators of this project.

Through the activities unrolled in the four districts on the Olt river side, the “Adopt a river” project drew attention towards the constant aggressions on nature, and also showed how important is this common effort of identifying solutions for the affected communities.

Human activities regularly deteriorate the water quality, whether we are talking about the house waste, the tourists’ irresponsible behavior or chemical waste from industrial processes. The Olt valley is one of the best known touristic destinations in Romania. Unfortunately, this might also be the reason for which the Olt’s sides are one of the most affected by thrown away PETs or other wastes thrown in the river water.

“This project is meant to show everybody that we can do otherwise, that we can have clean waters, correctly stocked wastes, efficient water administration, responsible communities, healthy nature. The “Adopt a river” project is an urge addressed by Romtelecom to each Romanian: assuming the responsibility for all our gestures is the first step towards having cleaner waters”, statedCristina Popescu, Romtelecom PR General Manager.

“The most important accomplishment of our project is the result of the volunteers’ spirit, their wish of repairing the situation, of cleaning garbage the others left behind. We want this spirit of responsibility and civic activity to represent an urge given to local authorities and communities in continuing the work we started.”, stated Costel Popa, manager of “Save the Danube Delta” Association.

At the closing conference for the “Adopt a river” project, also participated representatives of the local authorities, representatives of implied public administration and of the Romanian District Association.
