High tech laboratory for the Faculty of Electronics. Launch of the second edition of “Cool ideas” competition

The students of the Faculty of Electronics in Bucharest can use, starting with this academic year, a high tech laboratory equipped by Romtelecom and Huawei Romania. Starting today, October 25, the second edition of the national competition “Cool Ideas” with topics from multimedia area is also launched for young people.

Based on a partnership with the Faculty of Electronics, Romtelecom and Huawei Romania renovated, equipped and modernised the laboratory of systems and telecom networks of the educational institution in Bucharest. The investment in this laboratory amounts to over Euros 200,000.

Romtelecom has invested in this laboratory in order to provide young engineers and students an environment where they can test and use the new technologies. This environment will facilitate the young people to improve their capabilities in handling configuration of systems or even troubleshooting, enabling them to better develop. Romtelecom has decided long ago that the difference between the companies stays not in the technologies, but in the people. So we try therefore to find the most talented people and promote them,” stated Yorgos Ioannidis, CEO Romtelecom.

On his turn, Jeff Wang, General Manager Huawei Romania, stated that: „We are honoured to be partner with Romtelecom, leading telephony operator in Romania and Politehnica University Bucuresti, the biggest education institute in Romania. We think education is the key element for personal and professional development. In China Huawei recruited tens of thousands of fresh students from top universities of the country, supporting the key competences of the company, the research and development. Today we are very happy to share our latest technologies with Romtelecom’s high competence and with the University’s top educational standard.

The Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, Teodor Petrescu, considers that: „One of the objectives of the development strategy of the Faculty of Electronics is to cooperate with important companies in the field to train specialists and to carry in common research and development projects. In this context is included the traditional cooperation with one of the biggest telecom companies in Romania, namely Romtelecom, which was reactivated by the inauguration of the laboratory within the faculty, and by jointly developing masters, scholarships or internships programs.

Moreover, Romtelecom for Romanians Foundation, through which is rolled out the partnership with the Faculty of Electronics, offers to the students in the third year of study or masters students within this faculty five scholarships in a total amount of Euros 10,000, to which are added internships in Romtelecom.

The master students of the same faculty will also benefit of the expertise of a Romtelecom representative within a series of seminars scheduled to take place in the second semester of this academic year.

Last but not least, the students of the Faculty of Electronics in Bucharest interested in Romtelecom activity will be able to benefit of visits in various technologic centres of the company through the program „Being a student in Romtelecom” which will take place at the beginning of November.
Moreover, today, October 25, is launched the second edition of the national competition “Cool Ideas”. By April 30, 2011 the young people aged under 35, can enter the competition with multimedia solutions.

The themes proposed for the competition are available on the dedicated website www.ideitari.ro. The projects, which can be submitted online on the same website, will be marked depending on the innovation level, the applicability of the ideas and the capacity to offer solutions. The winning team will be the one which will score the highest points.

In a first phase, the projects entering the competition will be evaluated by a mixed jury formed by Romtelecom specialists and university professors. In a second phase, the authors of the most appreciated 15 projects will present their works in front of the same jury, during a dedicated event which will take place in Bucharest.

The most valuable projects will be rewarded with prizes of up to Euros 10,000 in total (first place – Euros 5,000, second place – Euros 3,000 and third place – Euros 2,000) and internship stage within Romtelecom.

The national competition aims to repay the passion of young people for IT&C field, to encourage performance and to stimulate the interest for the study, research and innovation in this domain.
